Heading to South Africa for the World Cup 2010? 5 Top Photography Tips for Sporting Events by Canon Australia
It’s official – World Cup fever is on and soccer fans across the world have booked their seats in hopes of watching their heroes square off against some of the best teams in the world. And if you’re headed to South Africa, you want to make sure you have your digital camera handy to capture all the important action.
If you’re looking to get some great shots at your favourite sporting event – here are some easy tips to keep in mind:
- Keep an eye out – don’t spend your time peering through the camera viewfinder. Use your peripheral vision to keep an eye out on what’s going on outside of the frame.
- Focus early – professional photographers need good instincts to capture the moment but they also rely on good preparation. If you’re using a digital camera with auto focus, like the Canon PowerShot range, you can pre-focus your shot by pressing the shutter halfway, thus reducing shutter lag and speeding up your timing.
- Know the play – it pays to know the players and the rules of the game. You can anticipate critical moments in the game and know which will be the players that will make the big plays.
- Reaction shots – don’t just stick with the action and game play – sometimes the most powerful sports compositions are the reaction shots of the players or even the supporters in the stands. Emotions help tell the story of the action as it unfolds.
- Get your equipment right – sports photographers usually work with more than one camera body so they don’t miss out on any of the action whilst switching lenses. If you have the luxury of having multiple SLR cameras, you can set one up with a good telephoto lens to get in close and another with a wide angle lens for wider action shots. Otherwise, keep some simple accessories handy, such as in a fanny pack, so you can change gears quickly and smoothly.
Whether you’re headed to the World Cup or the local footy match, you’ll want to keep a good memento of that unforgettable moment. Will you be there to capture the Socceroos action?
